LESSON 1 – WELCOME, EXPECTATIONS, WHO ARE WE?

Goal: Set expectations, learn something of each other. 

A. Why learn IB Biology?

  1.  Nothing is more mysterious, more mind-defying, more special, and touches the emotions like Life itself.

  2.  Your body is the most exquisite tool you will ever possess. Learn to use it in as many ways as possible (Baz Lerhman, Suncream). But also learn to care for it. For there is so much complexity to leading a healthy life, and protecting your body from harm, and helping to maintain it. The greater your understanding of it, the greater your power will be to protect your own, and those of others.

  3.  The world is losing it’s beauty. Ecological systems are damaged on a global scale. I was lucky enough to live in an unspoilt natural paradise as a child – Vanuatu, and I have seen how transformational an intact natural environment can be. Clean water you can drink. Air you can breathe freely. Magical lifeforms everywhere. Quality environment = Quality human life. But how do we get back what was lost, and prevent further damage?

CLASSROOM LEADERS:

  • VOICE of the class: speaks for the class, gives feedback to teacher and asks for changes as appropriate.
  • TIMEKEEPER: Keeps the class on track during the lesson.
  • AUDITOR: Let’s no student get left behind. Assesses the learning of the class against the learning goals. Feedbacks to class.

TASK: NOW who are we? Go and select an item from your homes and bring it back. Be prepared to talk about it and explain what it means..

 UBUNTU Challenge: Create a way of combining all the items selected by the class into a single image. Send it to me. Time allowed – 24 hours.
